Cotswolds

The Cotswolds is an idyllic area of Southern England and a must see destination.  It typifies the essence of unspoilt, rural England - as if time has stood still for 400 years.

The name "Cotswolds" comes from "cots," meaning sheep enclosures and "wolds," or rolling hills.  The honey-coloured limestone houses and churches of sleepy villages in hidden valleys give the area its special appeal.  Whether viewed In bright sunshine or rain, the golden stone radiates warmth and makes the Cotswolds a place for all seasons.  It is hard not to fall in love with the tranquil nature of this unique area of outstanding beauty.

The area rose to prominence  in the Middle ages with fortunes made in the wool trade.  Local merchants built stunning churches and villages to show off their immense wealth.  Sheep are still a mainstay of the economy and you will see meadows of sheep and lambs around every corner of the winding country roads.

Only 70 miles from the centre of London, the area is easily accessible and makes for an unforgettable day trip for those wishing to experience the heart of rural England.  Rolling hills, meadows and quiet streams meander through sleepy medieval villages and are contrasted with bustling historic market towns such as Stow-on-the-Wold or Broadway, where you can shop to your heart’s content or enjoy a pint of local beer and a meal in an ancient inn.
There truly is something for everyone:
  • Historic stately homes, including 800-year-old Sudeley Castle, the final resting place of Catherine Parr, Henry VIII’s surviving wife.
  • Roman towns - Cirencester or "Corinium" was the second largest Roman town in Britain.  The Roman road  "Fosse Way" bisects the Cotswolds from northeast to southwest.
  • Beautiful gardens and arboretums, such as Hidcote and Batsford.
  • Footpaths, for leisurely walks or serious hiking – The 100 mile Cotswold Way follows the escarpment from Chipping Campden to Bath.
  • Secret unspoilt villages - Take a leisurely stroll, admiring the stunning thatched cottages and "Wool Churches."
  • Fine medieval hotels - Many of these properties look the same today as they would have to travelers hundreds of years ago.
Just let us know your interests and we will propose a one or two day visit especially tailored to you and your party. We offer flexibility to change the itinerary according to the season and weather.  Want to stay longer to do some serious shopping in one of the market towns?  Take advantage of a sunny day and do a one hour walk/hike?  We can adjust the programme on the day.  Our aim is to make your trip as personal and memorable as possible.
